Meet Baljit
I have always been fascinated by people and their stories. Even as a child, I was curious about how people navigate difficult experiences, find strength in adversity and continue to grow. That early curiosity became a lifelong passion for understanding the human experience and ultimately led me to my career as a therapist.
What led me here
Where the story begins
Trauma was woven into the fabric of my family history long before I had the language to understand it.Born in India, both my parents Amar Singh Kamal and Barkha Rani, survived the partition of India. Their lives were shaped by displacement, uncertainty and the experience of having survival imprinted on their very existence.Years later, they would leave again. Only this time to be further away in a foreign country in completely unfamiliar territory; in England. Embracing opportunity and possibility, they carried with them a determination to make something meaningful from the life that remained. It was almost as though surviving had given them a second invitation to life, and they intended to accept it wholeheartedly.Their story revealed how migration often encompasses both grief and hope simultaneously: the sorrow of leaving one life behind and the aspiration of creating another. Trauma can extend across generations, but so too can resilience. Perhaps that is one of the greatest inheritances anyone can receive. An Introduction
The stories of survival and rebuilding belonged to my ancestors long before I had the language to understand them. Yet their echoes inevitably became part of the landscape in which my own identity was formed.Every place we live leaves a psychological imprint. I grew up in England, yet carried with me a portable sense of home, stitched together from the patchwork of cultures and places that had shaped me. Over time, I came to understand that belonging isn't simply about geography, it is about recognition. Each place became another cultural layer of my identity. My curiosity began to shift from asking, “What happened?” to “What happens next?” How does someone rebuild when life has changed beyond recognition? How do we carry experiences that may have been lost, silenced or overshadowed without allowing them to become the entirety of who we are?Behind closed doors I witnessed that resilience is not about being untouched by adversity. Sometimes resilience is much quieter where we can carry vulnerability and extraordinary strength simultaneously. That pain and hope can coexist alongside one another, and that even after significant loss and change, it is possible to rediscover meaning, foster connection, and cultivate a renewed sense of belonging beyond the chapters we never chose for ourselves. Today, this understanding forms the foundation of both who I am and how I work with others.
I feel privileged to sit alongside people as they begin to understand their own stories, reconnect with themselves and discover that what happened to them may always be part of their story, but it does not have to define how that story continues. And perhaps, in helping others make sense of where they have come from and where they want to go next, I am also, honouring the stories of those who came before me.Why I do what I do?
My therapeutic journey began as a voluntary bereavement adviser with Cruse Bereavement Care, stepping into the homes of people navigating loss, whether through natural causes or under traumatic circumstances. From meeting my very first client in 2013, I knew I had found a path that would change the trajectory of my life. I have never looked back.
Over the years, my work has grown to encompass both one-to-one and group therapeutic support. I have worked with a national charity supporting individuals and families bereaved through road deaths, including facilitating an eight-week Building Resilience programme.
More recently, I have worked within higher education, providing psychological support, as well as offering critical incident support to families attending a public hearing.
In my work, I encounter the full spectrum of what it means to be human. I witness despair and hope, connection and loneliness, tenderness and contempt. I meet people who feel caught in deeply ingrained patterns, and others who experience a profound sense of aloneness, sometimes even when surrounded by those closest to them.
But I also have the privilege of witnessing something else: the moment someone begins to understand themselves differently. When the patterns that once seemed inexplicable begin to make sense. When self-judgement gives way to curiosity. When someone starts to recognise that while they cannot rewrite what has happened to them, they can begin to shape what happens next.
This remains at the heart of why I do this work, and it is what continues to give me a zest of energy when I wake up in the morning!
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.Growing older doesn't frighten me, having an old mindset does! So, as long as my mind remains curious and I can continue to connect meaningfully with other people, I intend to keep doing the work I love until my last breath!
